Recently, Paul Miller (BEd'79) suggested we include a recording of the University of Calgary's motto on the alumni website. Our Gaelic motto "mo shúile tógam suas" translates as "I will lift up mine eyes" and pays tribute to the Scottish heritage of the founders of the University and the City of Calgary. In response to Paul's suggestion, you can listen to an audio file of the University's motto as spoken by Larry MacDonell. Thank you to Corey Telfer (BA'03, MA'06) for arranging to make the recording of Larry, his Gaelic studies classmate.
If you would like to learn more about the history of our motto, please visit Dr. Darin Flynn's website. Dr. Flynn is a professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Calgary. You can also learn about the history of the University of Calgary's Coat of Arms here.
