SMART - Sharing knowledge with industry and the community

Dr. Francis Hartman, Schulich School of Engineering

The U of C’s Dr. Francis Hartman developed the SMART Project Management® approach. His system and courses have been adopted by diverse companies in Canada, the United States and world-wide, including: Prairie Coal Ltd., Amoco Canada Petroleum Company Ltd., The City of Calgary, Cargill Ltd., Shell Canada Ltd., Digital Equipment of Canada Ltd., Terradyne Business Systems Ltd., Syncrude, PanCanadian Petroleum (now EnCana), MettNet Inc., Nortel, Reid Crowther and Partners (now EarthTech), Stuart Olson Construction Inc., NOVA Gas International, KPMG and Bearing Point.

SMART measurable results

Corporations utilizing SMART confirm the financial benefits realized.

Syncrude has identified a capital savings of $10million, which represents five per cent of the estimated capital cost of a typical project. The company considers these savings a direct result of implementing the Value Engineering process taught by Dr. Hartman.

The former PanCanadian Petroleum (now part of EnCana) estimated the project management principles taught and derived from research undertaken at the U of C saves at least 15 per cent on a project-by-project basis.
