How to Get Money

A university education can be a very satisfying investment - both personally and financially. However, the investment in your post-secondary education can be substantial so it's imperative to plan ahead. The University of Calgary Student Awards and Financial Aid office can help you.

Awards

U of C awards are normally based on academic merit. If stated, other criteria such as extra-curricular activities, leadership involvement, contribution to the community or campus life, and financial need are also considered.

Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships are cash awards given to you based primarily on academic merit.

A bursary is a cash award provided to a student based on academic merit and financial need.

Loans

Government Loans

Both the Federal and Provincial governments provide student loans for full and part-time post-secondary study. Students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and need to apply through the province that considers them a resident.

Some grants are available to special needs groups such as single parents, students with disabilities, students with dependents and part-time students

Bank Loans

Line of Credit

If you require additional funding assistance or are not eligible for government student loans, you can apply for a student line of credit through a bank of your choice.

Working

Part-Time Job

  • Your academic schedule may be such that you can manage part-time employment during the school year. Be sure to check out your options for working on campus too.
  • Canada-Alberta Service Centres - There are multiple locations in Calgary. These offices feature job postings and other useful career and employment information. See the lising of Canada-Alberta Service Centres

Emergency Funding

If you are experiencing financial difficulties, please take a moment to review the following information that may be helpful to you:

  • Application for Change of Circumstance Form - If you feel that your government student loan funding is insufficient to meet your allowable educational costs, you may appeal your student loan.
  • University of Calgary Emergency Loan Fund - This loan fund is available to students for short term, urgent financial requirements. In most cases, loans are only advanced to students who are expecting the arrival of other financial assistance. The maximum amount is normally $500 and can be made available to the student with one or two days notice.
