The principle criteria to be considered in placing a title on the ballot is based on the number of nominations received. Other considerations include reading enjoyment; reading level; interest level; genre representation; gender representation; racial diversity; diversity of social, political, economic, or religious viewpoints; effectiveness of expression; creativity; imagination; availability in the United States and Canada; and availability in paperback. All books must have an original American or Canadian copyright date three years prior to the year in which it will appear on the ballot.
Individual titles which in and of themselves may be controversial or offensive to some people, may be selected if they have received a substantial number of nominations or if their inclusion contributes to the diversity of the ballot. No title will be excluded because of the race, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, political or social view of either the author or the material.
Individuals wishing to express their opinion or concerns about a title on the ballot may do so in writing to the YRCA Chair. All individuals expressing concerns will receive a response in writing. This correspondence will be addressed at the Pacific Northwest Library Association's annual conference during the YRCA Committee meeting.
The Pacific Northwest Library Association strongly encourages people to suggest titles to be included on the ballot. Serious consideration will be given to all nominations.
